Epona was a very popular goddess in Gallic Celtic mythology and is associated with the horse. Her name means “Great mare” in Gaulish.
Epona was a fertility goddess, as evidenced by her attributes: the patera and the cornucopia, as well as the presence of a colt on certain sculptures.
In imperial times, Epona became the patron goddess of means of communication with horses or mules as well as a protector of stables, muleteers and grooms.
